How Fiber Finds Its Way to Your Home

Getting might seem like an easy peasy process, but getting that connection from the network to your home takes careful planning, specialized equipment, and plenty of work behind the scenes. Learn more about what it means to get aboard with fiber internet!

In areas where we are expanding fiber, the process begins long before installation day. Our teams review project logistics, assess existing underground duct, build new routes, pull and splice fiber, and test the network before homes and businesses are ready to connect.

Once fiber is available at your property, the focus shifts to bringing that connection the rest of the way home.

It Starts with a Site Survey

Every property is different. Yards, driveways, sidewalks, landscaping, utility lines, and the location of the building can all affect the best route for fiber.

A site survey helps crews determine how the fiber drop will run from the nearby PED, or pedestal, to the home or business. It also helps identify where equipment may be placed and how fiber will enter the building.

If fiber construction is coming to your area, do not wait to complete your FREE site survey. Getting it done early helps our team plan your connection and keeps your property moving forward in the construction process.

Utilities Are Located

Before underground work begins, existing utilities must be identified and marked.

You may notice colored flags or paint in your yard before crews arrive. These markings help show where electric, gas, water, communications, and other underground lines are located so crews can plan the work safely.

From the PED to Your Property

The PED connects the larger fiber network to the individual fiber drop that runs to your home or business.

Once the route is planned, crews install the drop based on the property layout, existing utilities, and the location where fiber will enter the building. Depending on the property, the drop may be buried directly or placed through existing duct.

Crews work to limit disruption to lawns, landscaping, sidewalks, and driveways while creating a reliable path to the property.

Cleaning Up the Work Area

Some soil and grass may be temporarily disturbed during underground work. Crews work to clean up and restore the area once their portion of the project is complete.

Because soil can continue settling over time, especially after rain, some changes may appear later. If something looks out of the ordinary, please contact Premier Communications so we can document the concern and coordinate with the construction crew.

Getting the Connection Inside

After the outdoor work is complete, one of our technicians will bring the connection into the home or business, install the necessary equipment, activate the service, and test the connection.

The technician will also help make sure your router and Wi-Fi equipment are positioned appropriately for your space. We highly recommend our GigaSpire managed router, which gives you added control and visibility through the PremierHQ app.

At that point, the journey is complete. Fiber has traveled from our network, through the PED, across your property, and into your home or business.

Bringing Fiber to More Communities

Premier Communications is continuing to expand fiber into more areas. Registration is free, with no service obligation, and helps us plan construction and keep you informed as service becomes available.

Fiber projects currently in registration as of July 17, 2026, include:

  • West Okoboji/Wahpeton
  • Ashton
  • Rock Rapids, in town
  • Hull, in town

Registering gets your address on our construction list, but completing your FREE site survey is an important next step. Do not wait until construction is wrapping up in your area. Scheduling your survey early gives crews the information they need to begin planning the path from the PED to your home or business.
