Don’t Take the Bait: How to Spot a Phishy Email

Ever get an email that makes you pause and think, “Wait…is this legit?” You’re not alone. Phishing scams are designed to blend in with everyday messages, but once you know what to look for, they’re much easier to spot.

Phishing emails are getting seriously good at blending in with messages from companies you trust. That makes it a whole lot easier to get “hooked” if you are not paying close attention. 👀 🎣

Lately, we’ve seen examples with subject lines like “Keep Your Email Access,” pushing you to “confirm” or “update” your account. Another even has the subject line of "Premier Communications wants your feedback!" and appearing to be an official survey from us. These emails might look like legit communications, but, in reality, those links can reel you into fake login pages built to capture your information. Once you click into any links, you may notice that the logo is slightly off, the layout feels a little strange, or you get an unexpected error message.

Small details like these are often the main hints that something phish-y is going on.

Here’s the good news: phishing emails tend to use similar bait tactics. Once you know what to look for, you can "just keep swimming!" 🐟🎶

Watch for these signs:

👀 Unusual tone or wording
If it feels off, trust that instinct.

🔗 Suspicious links
Always double-check before you click.

⚡ “Act now” messaging
Scammers want you to panic and rush.

📎 Attachments you didn’t expect
If you were not expecting it, do not open it.

💸 Promises of rewards or money
Classic bait, and rarely real.

🔐 Requests for private information
Legitimate companies will not ask this way.

🛑 Errors or poor design
Sloppy details can be a big giveaway.

As always, Premier Communications will never ask customers to verify account information through an email link.

To stay protected, skip suspicious links and type the webmail address directly into your browser. Take a second to double-check URLs before entering any login information. If something does not feel right, it is always better to pause and verify.

If you receive a suspicious email, report it to our team and delete it.

A few extra seconds of caution can keep you from getting caught on the hook. Stay sharp and stay safe. 🛡️
